Traumatic Dental Injuries

Trauma to the mouth or teeth requires immediate attention to ensure a high chance of saving and restoring damaged teeth. If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, carefully pick it up by the crown without touching the root, gently rinse it with water, and try to place it back into the socket. If you can’t do that, keep it moist in cold milk or between the cheek and gums and seek immediate emergency dental care.

See a dentist as soon as possible in the case of chipped, cracked, loosened, or displaced teeth to prevent further complications. If you can locate broken pieces of the tooth, bring them with you to your appointment. Prompt treatment can often help preserve the tooth and restore function and appearance.

Tooth Pain

Severe or ongoing tooth pain can be a sign that something deeper is happening and requires professional attention. Dental pain may be caused by tooth decay, infection, a cracked tooth, gum inflammation, or damage to an existing restoration. In some cases, discomfort may be an indication for more extensive treatment.

Dental pain usually requires treatment. For that reason, it is important to schedule an emergency dental appointment as soon as possible. Early treatment can relieve pain, prevent infection from spreading, and reduce the need for more extensive procedures later.

Gum and Soft Tissue Emergencies

Injuries and infections involving the gums, tongue, cheeks, or other soft tissues of the mouth may also require emergency dental care. Cuts, swelling, abscesses, or injuries caused by falls, sports accidents, burns, or foreign objects can become serious if left untreated.

A periodontal abscess, which is a painful infection in the gums, should be treated promptly to protect your oral and overall health. Rinsing gently with warm salt water may provide soothing relief temporarily but seek professional treatment to address the cause of infection.

If bleeding continues for more than several minutes despite applying pressure, or if swelling becomes severe, seek immediate medical attention.

Orthodontic Emergencies

You may experience discomfort during orthodontic treatment but certain situations may require urgent care. Trauma to the mouth, facial swelling, severe irritation, or damaged orthodontic appliances can interfere with comfort and oral health. Loose wires, broken brackets, or appliances causing significant irritation should be evaluated promptly to prevent additional problems and restore comfort.

If you are unsure whether your situation is really a dental emergency, our team is happy to guide you and help determine the best next step.
